Writing The $1,000,000 Press Release; You Can Do It

by Daniel Z. Kane

Well written press releases have produced great results for businesses of all sizes, from America’s largest corporations to small neighborhood restaurants and one person websites.

A good press release, distributed to the right media, can help you reach your target market very effectively. And, you can have professionals do everything for you at very little cost, or you can do it yourself, at no cost, as I do. But, you need to pay attention to the details.

Start with these simple rules.

Remember that press releases are also called news releases. An article that’s nothing more than an advertisement for your product or service won’t be published. Write about a topic that can be considered news, even if it is only about the opening of a new business or introduction of a new product or service.

You can see what kinds of news releases are prone to be published by reading your target publications…the publications in which you would most like to have your releases carried.

Don’t write in three paragraphs what can be written in two. Article space is at a premium in all media. If your article is “long”, it’s probably “wrong”.

Check your sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, etc. An editor may correct a mistake or two, but every mistake multiplies the chances of your release winding up with the morning coffee grounds.

Unlike advertising, where repetition is accepted practice, the shorter the release (within reasonable limits) the superior its chance of publication.

If you have any doubt about your ability to write an effective release, hire a professional. It’s worth the relatively modest cost if the release generates enough press for you.

Be sure you get your release to the right people. Do some research and/or use a service to distribute the release. Find the media folks who might be interested in your release, and don’t waste the time of others.

Do what many experienced marketers do. See if you press releases, with or without a little editing, can be used to add content to your website, can be adapted to become a blog article, or can be used as copy in your print publications.

Begin modestly with a relatively brief, targeted news release. See which publications use it and what kind of results it generates. Then write a second release, determine who used it and how you were impacted. By continuing to write and distribute releases, and by determining how effective individual articles and distribution methods are for you, you’ll soon learn how to use press releases to their ideal advantage.

Now that you understand what’s needed to write and distribute press releases that can move your business forward at the speed of light, why not start this day?
