Why is Your Google PageRank Dropping?

by Tom Sommers

All website owners and webmasters want a high pagerank (PR) for their site. A higher PR means a higher rank in the search engines and higher traffic volume. That’s a no-brainer. The problem is that some things you do to try to increase your PR can get you into trouble. Some can end up only lowering your PR and some can actually get you banned from Google entirely.

Have you ever been to a site that’s just loaded with flashing banners and other ads? The website owner just hopes you click on something. Well, if you have NOT seen this sort of site, that’s because they don’t appear on the search engine results. That should tell you something! With too many outgoing links, your site will be seen as just a link farm and you’ll get penalized for it.

When you add new pages to your site, you won’t necessarily improve your PR unless you link the pages together properly. Everytime you add more content, be sure it links to one of your important pages on your site. If you don’t, that new article won’t get indexed by Google.

There are certain types of pages that you should not add to your site. Google will penalize you if you’ve a lot of identical or very similar pages on your site. A rule to keep in mind is to ask yourself whether your page adds any useful information to your website visitor.

You would benefit more by acquiring several links to low ranked sites that are new and still working on their PR. Why? Because these sites have several benefits over monster sites and can benefit your PR better.

As you continue on your pagerank building tasks, one thing to take into account is to just quit thinking about your pagerank. Huh? That’s right. Forget about it. Concentrate instead on providing high quality content on your site. Remember, people use the search engines because they want good information. And like any business, your goal is to provide your customers what they want. By doing this, others will want to link to your site, and you’ll naturally grow your pagerank and your position in search engine results.
