So You Want to Run a Successful Blog?

by Russell Marsh

The term ‘blog’ gets it’s name from web logging. Blogs have absolutely changed over the last few years from a private log of one’s thoughts and actions, a bit like a diary into one of the most potent marketing forces on the internet today. The advantage of a blog over a traditional website is the interactiveness which more easily creates relationships between the blogger and his visitors.

Once created there are lots of options for monetizing the blog and lots of templates available to match whatever theme your blog is about. It’s also easy to create links from it to your business website or even link the two together via RSS. If you think a blog is the way forward for you then here are a few tips on how to get the most from your blog.

1, Visitors. The one thing you can’t afford to forget is that people have arrived at your blog looking for information more than likely after typing certain keywords into a search. Your content needs to stay on topic and keep them fascinated enough to explore more into your blog and possibly go take a look at your business website. So keep your content relevant and interesting.

2, Words fail. A massive block of text can become very boring when reading, especially on the web. A picture or graphic or two put within the text breaks up the strict framework of the post and keeps the reader interested through to the end. It is especially true if the picture is relevant to the subject of the post.

3, All your blog posts need to be on topic. Your blog should be in your niche whatever that’s so write content based on that all the time. People who find your content will always be interested in that subject and you don’t want to put them off by them arriving at your blog excited to read your next post only to find that it’s about something they’re not interested in. Keep their appetites whetted and they’ll keep coming back, get to know and trust your judgement and eventually you’ll have a customer, possibly for life!

4, Simple English. The secret of a good post is to write in language your visitors can easily understand. Everybody out there isn’t a graduate and you can easily put people off if your text is too full of technical jargon and overly large words. Short snappy sentences and paragraphs with plenty white space makes for a superior read.

5, The “Comments” option in blog should always be left on. You want to know what your visitors are thinking and whether they enjoyed your posts and possibly they’ll tell you what they want to hear more about. This is pure gold to any blogger. Your visitors are virtually writing your blog for you. They might even comment an opposite point of view from yours but that is a good thing! It’s all relevant content which is great for other visitors and conversation is always good. Don’t forget to set your comments to “Must be approved” to deter spammers.

Always make sure that you have a definite plan of action before even starting your blog. You need to be committed to entering fresh content on regular occasions. There is nothing worse than a stale blog so make sure you’ve a regular schedule and stick to it. Visitors soon realize when you’re not updating regularly and hard won visitors you don’t want to lose. Don’t for get to answer comments that need to be answered as well. Your visitors who provide comments also supply their email address so this is a great tool for building your list as well.
