Management Games Will Improve Your Company’s Teamwork

by George Purdy

Games are being played at work by plenty of employees, but it’s not the on the web games you might think that they’re playing while hiding it from their bosses (though it could be those, too). These games are different because employees are not blocked from them, and employees won’t get in trouble for playing. The reason is because these are actually management games that are and inventive type of training aid.

The gist of management games is similar to team building games many participated in during school. However, the aims are somewhat different. Whereas team building school games focus on getting to know each other and “breaking the ice,” team building management games focus on improving and enhancing relationships between coworkers. The games still contain an element of introduction, but are focused on results and building long-term relationships conducive to maintaining a positive workplace atmosphere.

Management games are mostly based on game theory, which is a focus on gains and connections between parties. This theory is used in many disciplines such as economics, politics and computer science. In fact it is so popular that many well know games are based on it. One example of game theory which is applicable to management is the “prisoner’s dilemma.” This type of game works well in a team situation because it focuses on the team as opposed to the individual.

Typically, management exercises are nothing more than workplace situations. The exercises inject the participants into real world situations and force them to work together as a team to arrive at an acceptable resolution to the exercise. Through these exercises the participants learn first hand how different people react in different situations and how to more effectively work with different people. A practical result of the exercise is effective control of change management.

Business team coaching is invaluable in today’s competitive business world. One form of training that’s commonly used is management gaming. These games can bring out principles and ideas that might be dry and tedious for employees to learn as a list in a classroom setting. By playing a game, employees have fun learning and probably retain the concepts longer. Both educational type training and game training are readily available and can improve the teamwork of your employees.

Management games are not hard to begin. They have the ability to be done casually with our employees without any type special equipment or buys. There are a few that require clear instructions or simple props but all these items can be acquired with ease. The ideal part about the games is that there is variety so that if one does not pan out there are other for you to try. Go with what works for you.

Business owners all over the world are teaching their employees to play games at work. Just like the team building games that take place in school, there are management games at the professional level conducted for employees. Skills in change management can be learned through games that offer learning opportunities for everyone in the workplace. Using real life situations, game participants learn to synergize their efforts for a superior end product. The games instruct cooperative work ethic and invoke team spirit. These games are quite useful tools for business team coaching, as they are easy to organize and do wonders to boost team morale.
